How to Scan an Old Baby Handprint for Digital Backup
Scan or photograph an old paint or ink handprint at ~600 DPI, back it up, and know when to remake from a new photo.
Scan an old paint or ink handprint to create a safe digital backup before paper fades, tears, or disappears into a box. A careful scan preserves the original as it is. A new photo of the hand serves a different purpose: it gives HandPrint Magic current palm detail to make a fresh digital hand keepsake.
When scanning helps most
Scanning is useful when the original is meaningful because of its age, the person who made it, or the occasion it records. Keep the paint marks, uneven edges, and handwritten date. They are part of the object's story. The backup gives you a copy to share with family and protects the memory if the paper changes over time.
Use a scanner at about 600 DPI
Place the print flat on a clean scanner bed and scan at about 600 DPI in colour, even if the artwork looks black and white. Colour captures the paper tone and any paint variation. Save a master copy as PNG or TIFF if your scanner supports it, then make a smaller JPEG or PNG copy for sharing. Do not use automatic contrast settings that erase faint marks.
Photograph it flat if you do not have a scanner
Lay the print on a flat surface near a window in even daylight. Hold your phone directly above it so the edges stay square, tap to focus, and take several shots. Turn off flash. If the original is glossy, move it away from direct light or change your position slightly until the reflection disappears. Crop and straighten the best image, but keep an untouched original file too.
Name and back up the files
- Use a name such as 2019-06-14_Amelia_handprint_original-scan.png.
- Keep the original scan and any edited copy as separate files.
- Store copies in two places, such as your photo library and a trusted cloud or external drive.
Know when to preserve, not remake
A smudged nursery print may not have crisp enough detail for a polished rework, and that is fine. Treat it as a sentimental scan. Its value may be the paint, the date, or the tiny imperfect mark rather than a clean result.
When to photograph the hand today
If you want a new framed digital handprint with visible palm lines, photograph the hand today in even light with the palm open and in focus. HandPrint Magic currently works from hand photos, then delivers three PNG styles as a digital download. It does not turn an old painted scan into the same photo-based product flow.
Continue with long-term handprint storage, follow the hand-photo guide, or use the local printing guide for the finished copy.
